Latest News from the Retreat
Current Project
We are currently working on a project to create a Tree Trail around the gardens and have been identifying trees with the help of local friend Christina and a team from Shipstern Conservation (Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative). Henry Martinez is a botanist in Switzerland who was in Belize to give some assistance to Shipstern and he and his 2 colleagues, Ermilio and Eduard spent a whole day with us a couple of months ago confirming the trees we had identified and identifying the ones we did not know.
We have now completed the Garden Tree Trail and have 21 trees positively identified and labelled. It has been a challenging, exciting and very fulfilling project with thanks again to Henry Martinez and the team at Shipstern Conservation area.

Here is an example. The numbers on the trees correspond to a list so these three, 18, 5 and 3, read as follows:
18. (left)
MALPIGHIACEAE
Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth
English: crabboo
Spanish: nance, nanci
Maya: chi, sacpan
5. (centre)
RUBIACEAE
Guettarda combsii Urb.
English: glassywood
Spanish: arepa, verde lucero
Maya: tastab
3. (on the far right)
FABACEAE
Piscidia piscipula (L.) Sarg.
English: dogwood, wormwood
Spanish: habim, jabin
Maya: tiaxib
